What Happened to George Lucas?

Very simple question. What really happened to George Lucas? And why he feels the necessity to tamper with his own films, especially the Original Trilogy?

At this point I voted for option 4.

I do believe he makes these changes to deliberately piss fans off and he knows the changes do piss us off.

This is honestly the first release for the films that I have seen where virtually the entire fan base is pissed off at the changes.

Meh, none of the alternatives suited me. I would at least have put ONE more positive slant on things among them! I think Lucas is fine.

I think all these changes and so-called controversies are part of the grander marketing plan. It's not a leak, it's a controlled leak. Cheap advertising. And no, it doesn't need to be positive. I doubt any real boycott will happen.

That's why they do press screening for crap films. Bad publicity spreads faster.

I think he's just lazy and not particularly intelligent. I get the impression that he sits down, watches one of the OT films, points out a few things and calls it a day. Wait, why doesn't Darth Vader say anything when he kills the Emperor? Hey, he could say the same thing he says in Episode III. It's like poetry: it rhymes. You know, this shot would be a nice place to put in one of those aliens from the prequels. What was his name? The guy Anakin races against. Yeah, Sebulba. Attention to detail? No... definitely not.

Then, I guess you have the more sinister theory that Lucasfilm deliberately screws up something in every release of the films to make people keep buying them. I could see that too.

Option 5.

He was once a very capable director, but he became utterly blinded by success and technology. Before the shambles that is the PT, he was an icon and an absolute giant of Hollywood, worshipped to almost mythological proportions as a god. In the years after Star Wars, throughout the entire 80s, he chose to remain behind the scenes in a productory capacity and in doing so he became an enigma, a symbol of magic and riches beyond your wildest dreams. And before the PT, he believed it himself. He courted his own hype and his ego was a force of nature.

He's struggled ever since to come to terms with his monumental fall out of favour and so he takes out all of his frustrations on what his one-time fans love most - the OT. He's angry with the fan backlash and this is how he deals with it; by punishing them.

After George sees this latest act of insolence he'll be left with no option but to make further adjustments to the future Blu-ray 3D versions.

My bet is he'll paste an artificially aged cg Ewan McGregor performance over Alec Guinness.

Thankfully Ewan McGregor is a genuine fan of the original trilogy and would never allow his face to be used for something like that...

He signed his likeness away to the devil; Lucas can whore his facial features out to his heart's content. Incidentally, McGregor has been known to slag off Star Wars ever since he didn't enjoy his part in it, to his great disappointment. Ewan is in AotC purely because he was bound by contract.

Liam Neeson was contractually obligated to appear in AOTC as Qui-Gon's ghost, but was unable to because of a motorcycle accident.

Meaning Neeson drove himself into a tree rather then appear in another Star Wars film.

You mean ROTS. He DID appear in AOTC, with one line: Anakin! Anakin! NOOOOOOO!

That line was tracked from TPM.

Options 1 and 5 are not mutually exclusive. I believe they can both be true at the same time. I honestly think he believes these are continual works in progress, but I also think he's nuts and there is no system of checks and balances to calm the crazy.

Doesn't sound like Liam Neeson screaming "NOOOOO!" (in a pretty ridiculous fashion). The "Anakin, Anakin!" is straight out of TPM.

I voted option one. The changes the old fart makes to the movies are clearly insane, but he's doing what he feels is right by him. He's OLD and lost touch. The world changed around him. Look at his attempts to adapt with technology. It's not just about CGI'ing shit everywhere. He's now boring, unfunny and doesn't even let Indiana Jones use his gun. Putz.

Maybe they recorded it recently specifically for the Blu-Ray... (like they allegedly did for Vader's ROTJ NOOOOOOOOOOO line. )
