Yes, he's directing it and of course Williams will compose the score.

Another opportunity for Williams to dabble in sci-fi can only be a brilliant thing, so roll on 2013, I say.

Awesome! The title is a little worrying, but I have confidence in Spielberg's taste. And even if the movie sucks, we'll probably get a great score.

Who knows? It might be Minority Report meets War of the Worlds.

The book synopsis seems to point to a Jurassic Park/A.I./Terminator kind of mixture. I hope Spielberg will get the opportunity to treat it as a serious sci-fi piece while making a mass popcorn movie.

I'm hoping for an epic anvil score! The Battle of Hoth on steroids!

Hmmmm....so I guess that means LINCOLN is postponed again for the 153th time in just as many years!
I'm looking forward to anything new Spielberg, and this seems like a fun premise, but I most of all want him to return to a more serious idiom again. MUNICH was so good, I wish we could another try on that style.

Finally, a steady flow of Williams music. War Horse, TinTin, Lincoln, Robopocalypse....all within a year and a half. It'll be good to get spoiled again.

So has anyone read the book? How is it?
This seems to be a similar situation to Jurassic Park, where Spielberg got the rights to direct the movie adaptation even before the book was released

Here's the plot synopsis from Amazon (it doesn't contain any spoilers, but I'm tagging it in case anybody wants to remain completely fresh):
It is also part of Amazon's "Best Books of the Year."
- Spoiler:
- In the not-too-distant future, robots have made our lives a lot easier: they help clean our kitchens, drive our cars, and fight our wars--until they are turned into efficient murderers by a sentient artificial intelligence buried miles below the surface of Alaska. Robopocalypse is a fast-paced sci-fi thriller that makes a strong case that mindless fun can also be wildly inventive. The war is told as an oral history, assembled from interviews, security camera footage, and first- and secondhand testimonies, similar to Max Brook's zombie epic World War Z. The book isn't shy about admitting to its influences, but author Daniel H. Wilson certainly owes more to Terminator than he does to Asimov. (A film adaptation is already in pre-production, with Steven Spielberg in the director's chair and a release date slated for 2013.) Robopocalypse may not be the most unique tale about the war between man and machine, but it's certainly one of the most fun. --Kevin Nguyen

So it's to be filmed in a similar style as District 9? If so I disappointed. And I can't imagine how a rich Williams score would work in a movie like that.

Well, you won't hear bright heroic fanfares and obvious colourful themes parading through the 7-minute end credits suite and balletic scherzo action music. I think we can put this one to bed.

I'd love to hear Williams going even wilder than War of the Worlds.

then the film could have been in pre-preproduction for a year or more (art, sketches, etc..) Just read JO & TLW Making offs and they did that there. before the films were announced they already had a lot concepts, storyboards and things like that

Well, if the film doesn't contain any score, I hope Spielberg will let Johnny do his own "Roar!". That would be quite cool.
